What is CCTV?

Closed circuit television, also known as CCTV, is a network of cameras and recording equipment connected through an isolated and private network (“closed circuit”). It is often used as part of a security system to guard against thefts, break-ins, and other incidents.

How does a CCTV system work?

A CCTV system is usually made up of cameras, storage devices and monitors. The cameras are linked up to monitored computers where footage and information are recorded on a hard drive (or the cloud) and stored for the length of time you specify. A CCTV system therefore refers to all the components that make up the system including the cameras, wiring, hard drive, cloud, smartphone app and everything in between.

There are many types of CCTV camera. Common types include dome cameras, bullet cameras, C-mount cameras and PTZ (pan tilt and zoom) cameras. Some cameras also have special features like infrared night vision and full colour night vision.
